Children Drawings x Saint Cataldo

Every year Taranto celebrates, on the 8th and 10th of May, the festival in honour of San Cataldo, bishop and Irish saint who arrived, according to legend, on the Ionian coast following a shipwreck, where he soon became the venerated bishop of the city. The celebrations in honour of the patron saint of Taranto begin on the evening of 8 May, the silver statue of San Cataldo is embarked on an Italian Navy ship and carried, then, in procession on the sea, between the two docks of the Mar Piccolo and the Mar Grande: accompanying the saint there is a picturesque fleet of fishing boats, motorboats full of worshippers in an atmospheric cameo of devotion, the soft tints of the sunset illuminating passage along the Navigable Canal, aided by the atmospheric and festive glow of the fireworks, as the crowd winds along the route of the Two Seas. The festivities culminate, then, on 10th May with the celebration of Holy Mass in the duomo and the procession which, following the saint's statue through the historic centre.
